Alison’s ‘Smile say Cheese’ Fun Photoblog

To mark my two years of being a Fuji Finepix member this month, here are some more adventures from my little people.

1.)Photographers... Photography inspired my imagination over forty years ago when I received my first camera on my 11th birthday. Though I had ‘the eye’ for a composition it wasn’t until two years ago when I joined the Fuji site that my photography really developed. Photography has been around for centuries and it is now one of Britain's best loved pastimes, enabling people to capture a special moment in a single snapshot. My ‘Smile Say Cheese’ is just a bit of fun I’ve compiled. Once again, I enjoyed the mini shoot with my Fuji HS10 camera and plastic figures. (less than one inch in scale)

2. Smile say cheese… Invented in the first decades of the 19th century, photography (by way of the camera) seemed able to capture more detail and information than traditional mediums, such as painting and sculpting. Photography as a usable process goes back to the 1820s with the development of chemical photography.

3.)The scene is set... Photography is an expansive art form that includes more than just portraiture, landscape or glamour photography. Both professional and amateur photographers may favour specific types of photography over others. While a professional photographer may work in photo journalism, an amateur may be particularly interested in macro-photography.

4.)Double Take...The term 'photography' was first coined by Sir John Herschel who used the term way back in 1830 when the photographic process became public. However, images were being captured much earlier than this. The first type of photography was seen in ancient times where camera obscuras were used to form images on walls in darkened rooms. A camera obscura is the first image-capturing invention which led to photography as we know it today.

5.)Vantage Point…The term ‘nature photography' applies to a wide range of photography. Included in the classification are wildlife, landscape and macro. The history of nature photography is as old as photography itself. In 1826, French scientist Joseph Nicephore Niepce positioned his camera through a second floor window to create the world's first photograph. The photo he made that day captured surrounding trees, courtyards and outbuildings known as a landscape photo. The exposure time necessary to capture this historic first image was an amazing eight hours.

6.)Perspective…Some scenes need to be shot at an angle either for artistic effect or because that is the only option available at the time. Shooting downwards, upwards or shooting across affects the intimacy a viewer might feel with the subject. The angle and perspective creates effectiveness. Lines within a photograph draws the eye along their path. Lines that form angles provide a touch of visual drama.

7.)Capture the moment…. Street photography is one of the cornerstones of traditional photographic genres. Photos capture the exotic imagery typical of travel photography, experiences and cultures. Photography can be a brilliant form of art and a quality photograph can have a defined effect and effect thoughts and feelings. I relate to the quote.....‘Photography, as a powerful medium of expression and communications offers an infinite variety of perception, interpretation and execution.’ Ansel Adams

8.)A fruitful photo... Photographs of people can be categorized in two general ways – posed and candid. Posed shots are great when they turn out the way expected. With candid shots there is no time to think for it’s gone in a blink of an eye and the moment is either captured or gone.

9.)Shoot...The history of cameras and photography is ongoing with new innovations appearing regularly. With the digital camera, amateur and photographer can now take multiple pictures and view them almost instantly. Innovation and necessity have driven the history of photography and cameras. With the vast knowledge of photographic techniques available today, further innovations can be expected in the future.

10.) Colourful... Colour photography wasn’t available until the late 19th century although the methods of capturing colour involved a lot more effort and preparation than black and white and was generally restricted to inventors who advanced the technology but weren’t able to commercialize their inventions. In the early 20th century this had changed and several photographers including amateurs were using a method known as Autochrome to take colour photographs.

11.) Frame the scene... In a park, forest, or gardens with flowers can make a good backdrop to create and frame a scene. Changing the position in relation to the people that are being photographed gives a different perspective and pleasing angle. I placed my little Senior Citizens on a pebble, placed Broccoli in the background and placed a pine cone by the side for this shot.

12.) Viewpoint... When framing a shot it is interesting to capture a different viewpoint. Faces don’t have to appear in the picture. The effect of framing the composition from a different angle gives a different perspective to the photograph. The term ‘photography’ has its origins in two Greek words. ‘Photos’ meaning ‘light’ and ‘graphein’ meaning ‘to draw’. So photography means literally translates into ‘to draw on light’ in Greek.

13.) Emotions... Like any art form, photography is meant to capture the range of emotions. From tears, joy, sorrow, wonderment, excitement, achievement, there are many emotions to look and capture in the frame. People are often asked to ‘Smile Say Cheese’ for a photo but some of the best emotional photographs are those captured on the natural flow of emotion and in natural environmental surroundings.

14.) Photography to a T... Macro photography is the art of shooting up close. The camera has a setting for macro mode usually symbolised by a flower. This type of photography can make ordinary objects look extraordinary. Detail can be seen that normally would be ignored. In reality adding a few people into a group shot and there becomes a diverse range of people pictures to work with. Photographing groups of people is really an extension of the environmental portrait and covers just about every other situation involving people.

15.) Brush up the Skills... It’s easy to get carried away with the big picture but with lowering the eyes and with a little creative thinking and the natural world looks equally impressive in miniature. Brushing up the perceptive skills helps to search for capturing that magical moment. There’s no shortage of subjects to photograph from the small to large from the sublime to the ridiculous.

16.) Carry on Clicking... Digital photography has now replaced film as the medium of choice for most consumers and professional photographers where the first digital cameras capable of reasonable resolution first hit the market in 1991.

Your mind must be a busy place!  What a lovely collection of sweet illustrations.  My favourite is the "emotions" shot--it truly demonstrates that you don't need to see your subjects' faces in order to pack an emotional wallop.

Broccoli hasn't been the best inour part of the world this year; maybe I should stop cooking it and start photographing it!  It works for you.

You continue to raise the bar for the rest of us.  I can hardly wait to see your tenth anniversary project--wonder what the state of the art will be by then.

You've gone and done it again Al. Well done for compiling another smashing blog with your tiny subjects. They've certainly had a lot of 'exposure' on the site recently which I'm very pleased about as I've become quite a fan of them and their mini exploits. I'm really glad to see that your original blog with them from last year was definitely no 'flash' in the pan as you've continued to both entertain and educate in equal measure when sharing their adventures with us. Your terrific imagination really 'lens' itself to the task in hand and time after time you've produced some wonderful imagery with your camera, tiny figures and props for us all to enjoy. I will finish off (before anyone says will you please 'shutter' up!) by saying Happy Second Fuji Anniversary, Al, and here's to many more!

Di. Wink Smile

The best yet!!

You could use this as part of a introductory course to photography, each image tells its own tale and you've managed to apply each figure in the pose and settings perfectly. wonderful, thanks for starting my day with a smile!

My fave, the happy hikers going bananas  Wink

The next challenge is to take them on a field trip with you!!
